| Start by the large information board on the
Montgo Natural Park (115 m) by taking the concrete road which immediately turns
into a track. When the track forks (13 min) (180 m), bend left for "Cova
del Camiell" and "Cova de L'Aigua". About three minutes
later you find a signpost pointing right uphill to the Aigua Cave. You
can visit the cave and then continue on the track.
Following the track ignore all paths that go left downhill. The track
narrows and turns into a path
(1h13min) (210 m), that crosses a gorge and starts
climbing the slope of Montgo. You meet an information board with the
text "Creuta Cim, 735 m". When the path forks
(1h23min) (245 m), keep
right. Follow the white-yellow waymarks and poles. At the crosspaths go
straight ahead. Follow the curves of the path without taking shortcuts.
The soil is vulnerable to erosion and people who take shorcuts leave new
stony paths behind. Especially on weekends you meet
large groups on this
very popular route.
The path gets steeper and starts to follow the
ridge of Montgo (2h23min) (600 m).
Splodges of red paint guide you. After the ridge, you zigzag a steep
slope, but then it gets easier.
From the top (2h55min) (750 m)
you
enjoy fine views over Javea
and Denia to the sea. If the weather is clear, you
can descern the Ibiza island in the east over the Cape of San
Antonio.
Looking south you see the monolith Ifach rising from the sea. From
southeast to southwest the panorama encompasses the mountains of Olta,
Bernia, Puig Campana, Aixorta with Aitana behind it, and Serrella
dominate the view. In the West, La Safor is the dominant mountain. If
you have picnic on the top, small birds
are probably going to join you.
Continue on the path and after a couple of minutes turn left
downhill. When the path forks (3h05min) (670 m) take the path in the middle with
a discoloured white-yellow waymark, not the path on your left, nor the
path on your right.
Immediately after the path starts ascending again (3h21min) (590 m), you find
a path that forks right to the cross you can see on top of the mountain.
You can visit the cross, but then return back to this point. Do not
continue on the path that goes on from the cross. It would lead you back
to the starting point of this route, but is very difficult.
Following the main path you start to descend (3h32min) (610 m)
and reach an
information board with arrows (4h10min) (480 m). The upper part of the board is
missing and therefore it is very confusing. Do not pay attention to it,
but take the path right downhill. This steep path comes to Racó del Pou
where it forks (4h40min) (325 m). Go left. You reach the track
(5h03min) (175 m) on which
you return to the fork with the signs for "Cova del Camell"
and "Cova de L'Aigua" (5h26min) (180 m). Bend left and continue
downhill back to the starting point (5h38min). |
