|How to get there: If
possible, do not take this walk in August or September, nor on public
holidays, because then the road is open only for public transportation
organised between Covadonga and the lakes.
Driving on the AS-262 to
Covadonga, continue from the roundabout to the left along the CO-4.
After 11.6 km, fork right following the sign for "Lago Ercina". Continue
less than 1 km to a large parking area, where the road ends. (Roadmap)
Go left from the parking area (1125 m). In a couple of minutes, you
follow a sign for the Mines of Buferrera to the right (3min) (1120 m). A
paved walkway descends between fine
rock formations to a small
(6min) (1100 m), where a white-yellow waymark guides you to the right
through a short tunnel (8min). You pass the
visitors centre of Pedro Pidal and come to a junction (11min) (1080 m), where you turn right
following the sign for "Belbin PR-PNPE-8".
Soon you come to a lookout spot (14min) (1085 m) with a view over the
vast plain of Comeya. The gently ascending track leads to the top of
Llomba (27min) (1165 m). Looking right, you see the
lake Ercina and the
Picos of Europa on its background. After crossing a brook (33min) (1120 m), you pass a fountain (35min) (1120 m), and continue through green
pastures. You go by one more fountain (42min) (1140 m), before the
herdsman's huts of Belbin (53min) (1050 m).
Keep right from the huts and climb along the slope to a
(1065 m), which you follow to the left. In front of you, opens up a fine
sea view. Further on, a white-yellow waymark guides you to the left, to
a narrower path (59min) (1055 m), which descends to the
plain of Mantegas (1h04min) (1025 m). In the plain, the path bends left and turns
into a paved track on the slope of Cantón de Texéu. When you reach a
fork (1h12min) (1060 m), be careful that you go left following now the
white-red waymark and the sign for GR-202.
After a short descent, bend right by a wooden pole towards a white-red waymark, which you can see ahead. The path ascends to a crest offering a
nice view over the plain of Comeya (1h16min) (1065 m). Following the
waymarks, you descend along a grassy
slope towards a plain. Magnificent rockwalls line the route.
When you reach the right side of the
plain (1h44min) (895 m), make
for a cottage in front of you. From the cottage (1h49min) (885 m) you
continue to the end of the plain (1h51min) (885 m). Down below, you see
the vast plain of Comeya. Do not continue right downhill along a path,
but bend left uphill. Looking up, you see the railings of the lookout
spot. Walking uphill, you soon see ruins of mining buildings and pass
signs for "Vega de Comeya". Higher up, you encounter a path with a
signpost to "Lagos de Covadonga PR-PNPE-1" (2h05min) (930 m). This path
takes you first to La Escalera (2h08min) (965 m) and continues with
wooden railings through a 15 meters long
tunnel. Follow the white-yellow waymarks to the parking place of Buferrera (2h20min) (1045 m), where you
turn left. You walk first along a paved walkway, and take then the steps
to Pedro Pidal (2h25min) (1070 m). From there you follow the familiar
route back to the parking place (2h37min).
