Walk from the parking area (1125 m) through the grassy field to the
left hand side of lake Ercina, where you encounter a sign for "Ruta Vega
de Ario, PR-PNPE-4" (5min) (1125 m). Lined by Pico Llucia the
ascends to the herdman's huts of Vega Vieya opening up a beautiful view
to the lake and the
Sierra del Brazu. From now on, the route is
a muddy cattle trail, which goes along the canal of Cuenye to a small
pass (37min) (1290 m).
From the pass you continue along a path bordered by handsome beech
forest on the gray rocks on your right. Later the path bends left
towards the herdman's huts of Las Bobias. By the huts (47min) (1255 m),
you meet cows, horses and donkeys. Cross the
pasture towards the sign in
front of you. From the sign, the path goes first uphill and descends
then pass a beautiful
fountain to a sign (1h03min) (1265 m).
The path becomes stony and takes you through a rolling landscape with
gray boulders surrounded by gray mountains to the hill of Las Reblagas
(1h28min) (1440 m). After a shallow depression, you walk for a while
along the plain of Las Campizas, before the ascent to the
pass of Jito.
On your way, you pass a fountain. Once you reach the rocky pass
(2h12min) (1640 m), you find a sign for "Refugio Marques de Villaviciosa"
and a panel presenting the surrounding peaks of Picos de Europa.
Bending left the path comes to the
plain of Ario (2h22min) (1630 m),
where it descends to the
cottage of Marques de Villaviciosa
surrounded by the
Picos of Europa (2h26min)
(1625 m). Return on the same way back to the lake Ercina (4h40min).
