How to get there: Driving on the
A-326 from Castril towards Huéscar turn left after some 4 km, between
the kilometre posts 28 and 29, on a narrow asphalt road signposted to
"Parque Natural Sierra de Castril" and "Nacimiento del
Río". When the road forks some 400 metres further, keep right. It
turns into a sand road after 1.3 km from the junction. Drive on this
road altogether 8.3 km until you see an information panel on the walking
route "Hoyos de Moreno - Barranco de Canalejas" on your right.
(Roadmap)
Distance: 2h42min/8.7km
|
| By the panel (1030 m) you find an uphill path.
After walking few minutes in a forest
a river starts to flow on your left. When you meet
another path (10min)
(1110 m), turn left. You follow the right side of
the Canalejas
gorge, and descend later into its bed (22min) (1150 m). On
your left you see a wooden pole waymarking an ascending path. Again the
path slopes down into the bed of the gorge (30min) (1195 m) and you find
another path on your left in three minutes. Next time the path continues
from the bed of the gorge to the
right (43min)
(1245 m), and the
following time to the left once more (55min) (1285 m).
The path takes you to a track (1h13min) (1370 m). Turn right towards
the ruins of a
building. In a minute you meet another track, Camino
Hoyos de Moreno. Turn left uphill. You walk through a beautiful pine
forest to a hill (1h33min) (1430 m) where the track bends right downhill.
Ignore a track that forks off left (1h38min) (1425 m) and continue
straight ahead on the track
lined by green terraces.
Descending slowly along the track you pass the Cortijo
del Peñon (1h50min) (1360 m) and cross some brooks. Further
down you see magnificent stone columns
and other rock
formations with bizarre
forms and later the building of the Nacimiento del Río surrounded by sheer
rock walls. In front of you loom the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. When
you come to the road of the Nacimiento del Río (2h24min) (1125 m), turn
left and follow the river
to the beginning of the ruote (2h42min).
